SWACH sponsors Fentanyl Prevention and Overdose Awareness Day

A Day of Remembrance and Action

The Southwest Washington Accountable Community of Health (SWACH) was proud to sponsor the Fentanyl Prevention and Overdose Awareness Day on August 21 at the O.O. Howard House in Vancouver. This moving event featured a memorial walkthrough throughout the day, followed by a community event from 3 to 6 p.m.

The Vancouver event was started by Lyn Fortner in 2017, following the loss of her son Ryan to a heroin overdose in 2012.

“In 2017 I decided Vancouver needed an Overdose Awareness Day,” Fortner said of starting the event. “Not only for those who struggled with substance use but for those who took a substance that had fatal consequences.”

Community Partners Come Together

A wide range of organizations participated in the event, setting up informational tables to raise awareness and provide resources. These included:

  • SWACH

  • Hands Across The Bridge

  • Columbia River Mental Health Services

  • Molina Healthcare

  • Share

  • Boulder Care

  • XChange Church & Recovery Center

  • Clark County Washington Public Health Harm Reduction

  • Lifeline Connections

  • Washington State Department of Social and Health Services - Community Services Office

Honoring Lost Lives and Promoting Prevention

The memorial walkthrough saw signs featuring photos of lost family and friends line the lawn of the O.O. Howard House in a touching tribute. These memorials served as a stark reminder of the human cost of drugs, evoking emotions of grief, empathy, and a shared determination to prevent future tragedies.

The day emphasized the importance of understanding the dangers of fentanyl, a highly potent opioid often mixed with other substances unknowingly. Attendees learned about strategies for recognizing and responding to an overdose, including the critical role of carrying naloxone (Narcan). Additionally, the event provided guidance on finding treatment and recovery resources for those struggling with substance abuse, with speakers sharing stories of losing loved ones and overcoming addiction.

SWACH Fighting Against Overdoses

As an organization, SWACH is committed to combating the opioid crisis through various initiatives. By utilizing data to identify high-risk areas, fostering strong community partnerships, and promoting harm reduction strategies, SWACH has been instrumental in making a positive impact. A key component of our efforts includes increasing access to naloxone through our Narcan vending machines placed throughout the region and offering comprehensive Narcan training programs.
