Community Health Improvement: Empowering Communities Through Education and Accessible Resources
Harm reduction is most effective when individuals and communities have the knowledge, tools, and resources to protect themselves and others. At SWACH, we believe that saving lives starts with education, accessibility, and collaboration. That’s why our Community Health Improvement (CHI) department is dedicated to expanding harm reduction education, increasing access to life-saving naloxone (Narcan), and supporting community-led initiatives through the Prevention and Recovery Alliance Clark County (PRACC).
Across Clark, Klickitat and Skamania counties, we are working to ensure that individuals, families, and organizations have the support they need—whether through harm reduction trainings, naloxone vending machines, or peer-led programs that promote recovery.
Harm Reduction Trainings: Building Knowledge, Saving Lives
Education is one of the most powerful tools in harm reduction. Our trainings are designed for both professionals and community members, equipping them with essential skills to respond to emergencies and provide compassionate support.
Training topics include:
Recognizing and responding to an overdose – Knowing how to administer naloxone (Narcan) can mean the difference between life and death.
Understanding fentanyl and synthetic opioids – Learning about fentanyl test strips and how to reduce the risk of accidental overdose.
Reducing stigma and supporting individuals – Encouraging nonjudgmental conversations and ensuring people feel safe seeking help.
Naloxone Vending Machines: Increasing Access to Life-Saving Medication
One of the most effective ways to prevent overdose deaths is to make naloxone easily available to the community. SWACH is expanding its network of free naloxone vending machines, ensuring that this critical medication is accessible without barriers.
These vending machines are placed in high-traffic areas, including:
Community health centers
Clark County Jail
Healthcare service providers
Local nonprofits and shelters
By removing cost and accessibility barriers, we empower individuals to take action in an overdose situation, reducing emergency room visits and saving lives in the process.
PRACC: A Community-Led Approach to Prevention and Recovery
The Prevention and Recovery Alliance Clark County (PRACC) is a coalition of community leaders, service providers, and individuals with lived experience who work together to address the substance use crisis. PRACC ensures that harm reduction strategies are driven by the people most affected.
Through PRACC, our Community Health Improvement team:
Advocates for policies that support harm reduction and recovery
Fosters collaboration among public health professionals, advocates, and policymakers
Engages people with lived experience to ensure programs meet real community needs
By combining education, harm reduction tools, and community partnerships, SWACH is helping to create a comprehensive, compassionate approach to reducing overdoses and supporting long-term wellness.
