Strengthening Community Health: CHI’s First Year in Action
Community Health Improvement aims to improve health equity and access to quality healthcare, that integrates behavioral and physical health, across Southwest Washington. We aim to strengthen a robust rural health network of community and health-based organizations addressing rural health needs and behavioral health care to maximize collective resources and support a workforce framework to build capacity.
Launched in 2024, CHI completed its first full year of work, making significant strides in harm reduction, rural health support, and overdose prevention across our region.
Expanding Access to Life-Saving Resources
A major milestone this year was the expansion of SWACH’s naloxone vending machine program, a harm reduction initiative ensuring that free Narcan—an opioid overdose reversal medication—is accessible in locations where it’s needed most. These vending machines provide a low-barrier way for individuals and families to obtain lifesaving resources without stigma or fear of judgment.
Investing in Rural Health
Rural communities often face unique healthcare challenges, including limited access to providers, infrastructure barriers, and fewer available health services. Recognizing these disparities, CHI launched SWACH’s first-ever Request for Proposals (RFP) to support rural health initiatives. This funding initiative allows local organizations to expand programs that address critical health needs in rural areas.
By investing in rural health solutions, CHI is working to improve access to care, strengthen local health systems, and ensure that community members can receive support without traveling long distances. This funding is a direct response to community feedback and is expected to make a tangible impact on improving health equity in underserved regions.
Engaging the Community in Overdose Awareness & Prevention
CHI played a leading role in Fentanyl Prevention and Overdose Awareness Day, a powerful event that brought together health professionals, advocates, and families to raise awareness, share resources, and discuss solutions to the opioid crisis. Events like these help break down stigma, connect people with life-saving tools, and provide education on overdose prevention strategies.
Through training sessions, public awareness campaigns, and partnerships with harm reduction advocates, CHI has worked to increase access to critical overdose prevention tools and ensure that individuals, families, and organizations have the resources they need to keep their communities safe. This year’s event was a testament to the power of collaboration in addressing substance use and supporting recovery.
Looking Ahead to 2025
After a year of growth and impact, CHI is building on its momentum to further strengthen community health efforts in the coming year. Key priorities for 2025 include:
Expanding the naloxone vending machine network to increase accessibility in high-need areas and enhance community partnerships.
Strengthening rural health initiatives by launching additional funding opportunities and collaborating with local providers and community organizations.
Increasing community engagement through educational events, training programs, and policy advocacy to continue amplifying local voices and driving systemic change.
By staying committed to listening to the community, breaking down barriers to healthcare, and implementing innovative solutions, CHI is poised to make an even greater impact in 2025. With a strong foundation built, the department is ready to continue expanding its reach and creating sustainable health improvements across Southwest Washington.
Moving Forward, Together
Through harm reduction, rural health investment, and community engagement, CHI remains committed to building healthier, more equitable communities. The team recognizes that meaningful change happens through collaboration, trust, and a shared commitment to improving public health.
With the dedication of local partners, the passion of advocates, and the support of community members, CHI is prepared to continue driving impactful change in the year ahead—ensuring that every individual in Southwest Washington has the opportunity to live a healthier, safer life.
